Griffins win season opener, 3-1, vs. Rivermen

October 03, 2009, 10:58PM
PEORIA, Ill. -- The Grand Rapids Griffins made sure they didn't start the 2009-10 regular season the same way they ended the last one: with a loss to the Peoria Rivermen.

The Griffins improved to 10-2-2-0 all-time in season openers with a 3-1 win against Peoria on Saturday night at Carver Arena.

The Griffins lost 5-2 to the Rivermen in their '08-09 regular-season finale April 11.

Grand Rapids' Andy Delmore and Evan McGrath scored in the second period to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, and Dick Axelsson sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 2.9 seconds remaining.

In his Griffins debut, goaltender Thomas McCollum made 23 saves, including 13 in the third period.

Trailing 1-0, Delmore tied it with a shot from 50 feet that eluded Rivermen goalie Hannu Toivonen with 8:02 left in the second.

Grand Rapids took a 2-1 lead less than 3 minutes later when McGrath fed Francis Pare, who passed it back to McGrath for a goal from point-blank range.

The Griffins have earned points in 11 consecutive road openers (9-0-2-0). They play their next four games on the road before opening at home Oct. 23.

Peoria's Ryan Reaves opened the scoring 6:32 into the first period when he banged in a loose puck at the goal line for a 1-0 lead.

Grand Rapids' Paul Crosty and Peoria's Mitch Love fought with 3:51 left in the second.
